In years past, Askeans played on a Friday night under floodlights vs Penarth on the eve of the 5 Nations England vs Wales fixture – a famous Askeans victory comes to mind, when our No. 8 Hugh Robson played a blinder, scoring a brace of tries.
It was good to revive the Friday night floodlit game tradition, this time before the final round of the 6 Nations tournament and against our good friends, Shooters Hill, with whom we now train – an excellent ‘Back in the game’ initiative.
Any hopes of a repeat of a pre-season win for Askeans were quickly dashed as Shooters Hill, with their direct penetrative midfield running, scored some early tries. By half time, they established a 19 – 0 lead and despite some good defence and forward play ,especially some excellent lineout work by Tom Henderson, Shooters Hill dominance was not seriously tested and they ran out worthy winners 41 – 7.
The irrepressible Charlie King finished off a fine spell of Askeans pressure just before no side and went over for a try.
Many Thanks to referee Sebastian Abate, who discreetly managed an outbreak of ‘Handbags at Dawn’ midway through the first half - and ensured we didn’t lose any balls over the stand ! (Easier to explain in person – Come along to Saturday’s Pre-Match Buffet and find out more!)
It was great being in a bustling bar on a Friday after a floodlit game, with Askeans and Shooters Hill players and supporters creating another excellent evening.
