Askeans into the Semis !

Updated: Feb 15, 2023

Askeans 33 – 20 Dartfordians II (‘Darts’)

Things are certainly looking up at Askeans.

Last Saturday the club qualified for the semi-final of the ‘Counties 4 Kent Shield’ – and with a game in hand!

The game against Darts started fast and we went into a quick 6-0 lead thanks to two early penalties from Roddy.

Askeans played an excellent tactical game, looking to play with pace and turn the opposition, illustrated by Roddy’s astute kicking and Charlie King’s quick tap penalties.

Askeans also played well defensively with Roddy’s excellent kicking taking the steam out of several Dartfordians attacks and not wishing to be left out the forwards, led by ‘Raging Bull’ Ollie Stevens and supported by Ciaran, Nick and the rest of the pack won a number of turnovers and penalties at the breakdown.

Although outweighed by a heavier 8, Askeans forwards were faster to the ball and gave us the advantage.

Askeans were deservedly ahead 13-0 at halftime with Jack scoring a great try just before the break.

But for over enthusiasm and some last ditch tackling by Darts, we could have been out of sight early in the second half - Sam Hills was just inches away from a spectacular try when he was brought down -

Despite two yellow cards for high tackles , Darts fought back and at 13-10 it looked like we had blown our chance.

However the high tempo set by Askeans had taken its toll on Darts who due to injuries, finished with 14 players.

The game swung from side to side - A great counter attack and a series of drives saw Danny Walkden go over

‘Go ‘Danny Boy’ – a refrain which may now replace the traditional Askeans ‘’Wild Rover’ in the showers!

A penalty soon after and Askeans had the initiative once more at 23 – 10.

Darts scored once more. But then came the coup de grace – A superb flowing move led by Jack and Roddy saw Roddy go over for a try, followed soon after by yet another Roddy penalty, taking his tally to 23 points.

There was time for a final Darts consolation try but by then, an Askeans win and a place in the Semis was secured!

– Askeans are on a roll – as is Danny who had rolled over (literally) for his second try in two weeks!
